Träume riechen und vom Riechen träumen: Einige Überlegungen zum olfaktorischen Potenzial des Traums

Für die Genese der Psychoanalyse war das Olfaktorische ein wichtiger Wegbegleiter: Die Fährten des Riechens und Stinkens ziehen sich von den Geruchshalluzinationen der Hysterikerinnen, Freuds Selbstanalyse und der Konzeption der Verdrängung bis hin zum »Unbehagen in der Kultur«. Der Geruch ist also ein Medium, in dem zeitliche und räumliche Vektoren diffundieren – er haftet Ursprünglichem an, das sich in Form von Reminiszenzen mit intensiver olfaktorischer Qualität immer wieder seinen Weg bis zum System »Vorbewusst/Bewusst« in voller Kraft bahnt. Besonders an der Grenze von Traum, Fantasie und realem Erleben birgt das Olfaktorische nicht nur als somatischer, sondern auch als virtueller Grenzgänger wertvolles analytisches Potenzial.

For the genesis of psychoanalysis, the olfactory sensation was a significant companion: The traces of smelling and stinking extend from the olfactory hallucinations of hysterics, Freud’s self-analysis, and the conception of repression to »Civilization and Its Discontents«. Smell is thus a medium through which temporal and spatial vectors diffuse – it adheres to the primal, manifesting in the form of reminiscences with intense olfactory quality, repeatedly finding its way to the preconscious/conscious system in full force. Especially at the border between dream, fantasy, and experienced reality, the olfactory not only serves as a somatic but also a virtual border crosser with valuable analytical potential.
