This study explores how ambient music (i.e., a genre that emphasises timbre and atmosphere) affects the content and experiential qualities of mental imagery (MI). In an online survey, 65 participants listened to three ambient excerpts intended to convey happy, tender, or fearful emotions, and reported the amount, vividness, and content of their MI, along with emotional intensity and liking. Imagery content was analysed using the thematic framework developed by Hashim and colleagues (2023) for orchestral film music in the classical style. Storytelling emerged as the most frequent imagery theme, consistent with patterns previously found for classical music. However, compared with the classical music data reported by Hashim et al. (2023), ambient excerpts elicited a notably higher proportion of Associations, particularly imagery related to feelings and atmospheres, suggesting a potential tendency for ambient excerpts to evoke more associative imagery. The amount of imagery was positively associated with the intensity of emotional responses and music liking. By applying the imagery-coding framework established for classical music, this study offers the first systematic account of imagery content evoked by ambient excerpts and shows that different musical materials can emphasise different forms of MI, while Storytelling consistently remains the most prevalent theme.

Diese Studie untersucht, wie Ambient-Musik (d.h., ein Genre, das Klangfarbe und Atmosphäre betont) den Inhalt und die Erfahrungsqualitäten mentaler Vorstellungen (engl.: mental imagery - MI) beeinflusst. In einer Online-Umfrage hörten 65 Teilnehmer*innen drei Ambient-Ausschnitte, die fröhliche, zärtliche oder ängstliche Emotionen vermitteln sollten, und gaben Auskunft über die Menge, Lebhaftigkeit und den Inhalt ihrer mentalen Vorstellungen sowie über die emotionale Intensität und das Gefallen der Musikstücke. Der Inhalt der Vorstellungen wurde anhand des von Hashim und Kolleg*innen (2023) für orchestral-klassische Filmmusik entwickelten thematic framework analysiert. Storytelling erwies sich als das häufigste Thema der Vorstellungen, was mit zuvor für klassische Musik festgestellten Mustern übereinstimmt. Im Vergleich zu den von Hashim et al. (2023) berichteten Daten zur klassischen Musik lösten Ambient-Ausschnitte jedoch einen deutlich höheren Anteil an Associations aus, insbesondere mentale Vorstellungen, die sich auf Gefühle und Atmosphären beziehen, was auf eine mögliche Tendenz hindeutet, dass Ambient-Ausschnitte eher assoziative Vorstellungen hervorrufen. Die Menge der mentalen Vorstellungen stand in positivem Zusammenhang mit der Intensität der emotionalen Reaktionen und des Musikgefallens. Durch die Anwendung des für klassische Musik entwickelten Imagery-Kodierungsschemas bietet diese Studie die erste systematische Darstellung des durch Ambient-Musik hervorgerufenen Inhalts von mentalen Vorstellungen und zeigt, dass verschiedene Musikgenres unterschiedliche Formen der MI betonen können, während Storytelling durchweg das vorherrschende Thema bleibt.
