Abstract / Description
Performance is arguably the most important aspect of an athlete’s career. One psychological factor linked to performance in sport is perfectionism. However, the nature of this relationship has proven contentious. This is because some researchers have suggested that perfectionism undermines sport performance, whereas others have argued that it may enhance performance. To help resolve this debate, the aim of the current review is to provide a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of research examining the relationship between perfectionism and sport performance. In doing so, we will examine (a) the overall effect of perfectionism on performance, (b) the relationship between dimensions of perfectionism (perfectionistic strivings, perfectionistic concerns) and performance, and (c) any factors that moderate the perfectionism-performance relationship.
