Das musikalische Mandala

Das Wort Mandala stammt aus dem Sanskrit und bezeichnet kultische Kreiszeichnungen, die als Meditationsbilder dienen. C. G. Jung forschte über Mandalas, sammelte sie und setzte sie schließlich auch in der Psychotherapie ein. Aline Valangin und Aleks Pontvik benutzten unabhängig voneinander den Begriff musikalisches Mandala und wandten ihn auf das gleiche Werk an: Die Kunst der Fuge von J. S. Bach. Die von C. G. Jung beschriebenen Formprinzipien des Mandalas, seine Aussagen über Musik und Hildemarie Streichs Ausführungen zur Atalanta fugiens von Michael Maier als ein weiteres Beispiel musikalischer Mandalas führen zu der Frage, ob es in Musiktherapie Formen gibt, die man Mandala nennen könnte. Hierzu werden zwei Beispiele musikalischer Meditationen aus der anthroposophischen Musiktherapie vorgestellt.

Mandalas (Sanskrit: „circle“) are used in various spiritual traditions as an aid to meditation. C. G. Jung collected mandalas from different countries and used them in psychotherapy. Aline Valangin and Aleks Pontvik both used the term Musical Mandala when writing about the same piece of music: The Art of Fugue by J. S. Bach. Regarding the formal principles of mandalas as described by Jung, his statements about music as well as Hildemarie Streich’s analysis of Michael Maier’s Atalanta fugiens as a further example of Musical Mandalas lead to the question wether there are any forms in music therapy which could be termed mandala. Two melodies used in anthroposophic music therapy will be presented as examples of such meditations in music.
