Abstract / Description
Based on Smith’s cognitive-affective mode of athlete burnout, burnout will lead to several mental and physical health consequences for athletes. This may include depressive symptoms, sleep problems, illness susceptibility, somatic symptoms and reduced life satisfaction. However, to date, few studies have examined these consequences through longitudinal designs. As such, the present study aims to examine the mental and physical health consequences of athlete burnout over three waves. The present study will examine whether athlete burnout predicts depressive symptoms, sleep quality, illness susceptibility, somatic symptoms, and life satisfaction. We aim to recruit 250 participants across three waves who are competing in their sport at a regional level or higher. The present study will adopt a three-wave random intercept cross-lagged panel model where we measure athletes burnout, depressive symptoms, sleep quality, illness susceptibility, somatic symptoms and life satisfaction.
